Remark at the World Higher Education Forum and
the 10th Anniversary of the Founding of the International School, JUFE
Distinguished guests, faculty members, students, friends, ladies and gentlemen,
Good Morning!
It’s my great honor to welcome you here to attend the 10th anniversary of the founding of the International School of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics (JUFE) and I greet most cordially all of you.
With the passage of ten years, the concept of experimental education reform on higher education has evolved into a colorful picture of international higher education. As the dean of the International School, I am very much excited because there is so much I would love to share with you. If we can describe the International School as a gorgeous picture scroll, then, on this special occasion, I would like to pick up a few petals to present some highlights of the school.
The first petal is honor. Since the foundation of the International School, students have won numerous honors in competitions both at home and abroad. On November 15th, 2009, the grand final of CCTV Cup English Speaking Contest was held in the broadcasting hall of Chinese Central Television Station. Having survived a series of fierce competitions, 23 contestants from top universities like Peking University advanced to the grand final. Among them the two contestants from Jiangxi were both from JUFE International School. Yang Zi, a girl student from International Finance 2007 Class Three, won the third place in the grand final, making a good presentation of JUFE International School to the whole country, and winning great glory for JUFE. Yang Zi is just one of the many best in the International School. Many other Yang Zi have also earned honors for the school. In order to motivate students to participate in all domestic and international competitions, a package of scholarship and reward system have been established, including 9 big categories and 500 sub categories. The total rewards that are granted reached 4.5 million RMB. Under the proper guidance and motivation, a large number of students achieved great success in competitions of various kinds, such as Outstanding Winner of National English Contest for College Students, Individual Gold Medalist of National Stock Tournament, Champion of the grand final of AIA-QCCC, Champion of National Multiple Leadership Contest, and First Prize Winner of China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. All the individual and team honors as well as the efforts they made have formed a perennial force in the International School, which has not only upgraded the reputation of the school, but also developed the school into a prestigious brand of JUFE.
The second petal is dream. Every September, new students entered JUFE International School with various dreams, one of which is to be educated in the world’s top universities. Can such a dream be realized for the students admitted into JUFE International School? An affirmative answer was given by Li Huanyang and Wu Suyao in September 2010, who were from International Accounting 2006 Class One and International Business 2006 Class Three respectively, the first group of students accepted into Cambridge University for postgraduate study. In the following two years, with their hard work and outstanding performance, over 30 students were enrolled into world top 100 universities, namely Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College, London School of Economics and Political Science and University of John Hopkins to further their studies. A saying is highly popular among students of the International School whether they are here in JUFE or in overseas universities, which is “if we are not in the library, we are being on the way to it”. To assist students in entering overseas top universities, the school has been making every effort to establish partnership with overseas institutes. So far, JUFE has developed international cooperation and exchange programs with 85 universities in 18 foreign countries and regions. In 2010, JUFE became the first ISEP member university in mainland China, which allows JUFE students to have access to over 300 universities in the world, including 155 ones in the United States. In 2011, 326 students studied abroad, 95 of whom were enrolled into the world’s top 100 universities for postgraduate study. Currently, over a dozen of students are doing doctorate studies in highly prestigious overseas universities. Another dozen of graduates are employed overseas in Wall Street, Australian Citibank, Scotland Royal Bank, Netherland KPN Telecom, or international trade companies in Finland, Germany, Sweden, etc. With increasingly large number of our graduates going globally, JUFEtizens’ dream of emerging on the world stage is gradually becoming clear and visible.
The third petal is growth ---the growth of the International School and its students. At the right beginning of last term, newly selected teaching assistants for the course of Calculus had an exchange meeting. At the meeting a student named Ruan Yiyao, from the International Accounting 2008 Class One, was sharing her reason of competing for a TA position, “I was deeply touched by the teaching assistants we had before, who were attentive and patient. Their endless efforts greatly boosted the students’ passion for learning, which then made me admire the job of TA a lot.” The TAs are selected from the outstanding juniors, senior and postgraduate students. Sharing their learning experience, guiding the slow learners, marking assignments and providing feedbacks to the teachers, TAs function as an effective bridge between teachers and students. With ten years’ explorations, the school has had a full understanding that internalization of teaching approach should be realized by means of both “teaching” and “learning”. The key for the change of learning approach lies in making students masters of their own learning. For this purpose, the school has compiled and printed Career Planning Guidance, clarifying to the newly arrived students the goals, objectives, content and methods of university learning. The school has reformed the assessment methods, highlighting the importance of formative and process evaluation. In addition, the school has also formulated Working Rules for the Teachers’ Guidance on Student Academic Activities, aiming at strengthening the students’ autonomous learning and ability of learning to meet practical needs. With the steadfast support from the International School, the students have established a variety of interest groups and clubs, namely the “Science Research Interest Group”, “Mathematical Economics Group”, and “Creative Writing and Critical Thinking Group”. As a result of the above initiatives, students’ self-management has taken root and is spreading widely in the school.
The fourth petal is internalization. At JUFE International School, “internalization” is not an empty slogan but a tangible, important and emotional word. Take a closer look at the International School, you will find that the interaction between our students and foreign teachers as well as foreign students is not confined to academic learning, but also involving the cross-cultural exchanges. Zhang Xinxin, from International Accounting 2010 Class One has been teaching Taichi at the request of a few foreign teachers. Since its foundation, Traditional Chinese Culture Research Society has been engaging foreign teachers and students in various cultural activities, creating an international environment with Chinese elements on campus, which bettered foreign students and teachers’ understanding of traditional Chinese culture and made them ambassadors for cultural exchanges. Chinese and foreign students attending lectures in the same classroom, seminars by foreign guest professors, foreign language teachers’ involvement in the English corner and internships in overseas corporations contributed to the formation of an international platform for study and exchange. To lay a solid foundation for the freshmen, an English language teaching team from Canada was contracted to deliver all English language courses, which contributed to the freshmen’ passing rate of 98% and 83% respectively for CET4 and CET6. From the second year on, original English textbooks are adopted for the major courses, which are delivered either in English, or bilingually. Moreover, around 50 overseas teachers from different parts of the world are recruited to teach juniors and seniors major courses in English language. They have brought with them the international way of teaching, facilitated the cultural exchange, eliminated the collision of ideas, and further broadened students’ international vision. In the process of building an international teaching environment, it needs to be noted that patriotic education is never ignored. Right from the start of the school, students’ affection and connection with the country, the university and the school have been cultivated and strengthened by means of party school, league school, class meetings and the university website.
The fifth petal is accumulation. To search Baidu for the website of the InternationalSchool, you will find that “Jiangcai Guoji” has become the most popular term in the list of vocabulary used. The name of the school has become a nostalgic symbol of our memories. Every graduation season, we see cohorts of graduates who have spent 4 years here leaving for a bigger world. What have they brought with them? What did the International School leave with them? Zhu Qiao from International Accounting 2006 Class 2 mentioned in her writing: “I have kept a small box which collected every issue of International Journey and Special Column for Graduation involving my personal participation. These are an important witness to my gradual growth in this school”. Another student, Lai Hui from International Accounting 2006 Class 3, left a message on Renren: “The website of our school is always in my favorite folder. Many late nights in the 2 years after graduation, I found myself opening this website inadvertently and checking what is going on in the school.” The school journals, the website, and the anniversary are the carriers of the culture accumulation of the school. In spite of its short history, the school has closely connected to thousands of people, specifically, 4244 students, 4244 families, 156 domestic faculty members, 95 overseas instructors, class advisors and program coordinators. You may not be present today, your name will still be kept in the mind of everybody who has been part of the school. Hereon, for those who care about the future of the International School, please allow me to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation: thank you!
The petals presented above embody moments of time in the development of the International School, however, if stringed together, what is recorded is the step-by-step realization of our dream of internationalization, which is the results of painstaking efforts of several generations. When the first wave of internationalization came into sight, JUFE top management, headed by Professor Wu Shian, then-JUFE Chairman of board and Professor Shi Zhongliangthen-JUFE president came to the right decision of establishing the International School after a careful consideration of cultivating international managerial personnel so as to cope with the fierce international competition. Together with his colleagues, Professor Lin Yong, former director of Foreign Affairs Office, did massive preparatory work for the establishment of experimental classes. The first dean, Professor Jiang Jinfa led his colleagues to undertake the experiments in this field and proposed the principle of “integrating teaching with learning, fusing western pedagogue with the eastern education philosophy, combing the external channels with the internal sources, and cashing on the valuable resources of prestigious university”. The second dean, Dr. Ye Longsen, heading his colleagues, continued the efforts to further develop the International School. Substantial support from every department of the university and constructive suggestions from employers and parents have inspired the International School to make continuous progress.
Looking back on the past ten years, the International School of JUFE has been adhering to the mission statement to cultivate graduates of entrepreneur skills and of the qualifications of “Fidelity, Acuity, Integrity, and Perseverance”. The school has been guided by Chairman Liao Jinqiu’s philosophy that “JUFE is located in the less developed area in the central part of China, if we do not emancipate our mind, or innovate our education system, or to capture the favorable opportunity for the development of higher education, we will not be able to reach the goal of upgrading JUFE to a new level”. In accordance with President Wang Qiao’s requirements that “talents cultivation is the fundamental mission of a university, education quality is the base of a university, unique development is the key to better a university and serving the society is the responsibility of a university”, we have explored a successful road for cultivating international economic and managerial personnel in less developed areas, making it possible to receive international education without going abroad.
By incorporating international faculty and western education pedagogue, internationalized teaching environment is achieved in the school. Drawing on the curriculum designs of some well-known universities outside China as a guide, the school has optimized the course design for our three programs. Delicacy management is realized through whole process assessment of students’ learning and collaborative innovation of the management team. Autonomous learning is attached great importance in the school. Various rules are formulated to facilitate the students to become masters of their own learning and to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability.
In terms of international collaboration and exchange, we have established numerous platforms and channels, which helped students to be admitted into top universities or employed overseas. We have so far turned out over 2700 graduates. Some are working in organizations like Citibank, HSBC, Standard Charted Bank, SG, ABN, big four accounting firms and Chinese Foreign Ministry. Some others are enrolled into world’s top universities, including Cambridge University, Oxford University, London School of Economics and Political Science, University of John Hopkins, University of Columbia, Australian National University and Hong Kong University to further their studies. Top quality graduates with their excellent performance have achieved good reputation and credit far and near, and are well received among different sectors in the society.
To fully display the International School of JUFE and to present the panorama of the picture scroll, you will see, in the green hills and blue streams, a group of people is sedulously searching by continuous interaction and exchange with the outside world. In the journey of internalization, we might follow the path that lead us out but comes back full circle home. No matter where we are, we will hold close to our heart a part for the International School of JUFE. The International School of JUFE is and will always be our carefully watched spiritual home.
Thank you!
