Overview
This course is an intermediate oral course for university students. The class focuses onlistening comprehension and oral production skills which necessary for participation in auniversity classroom. The class includes group discussion, conversational strategies,partner practiceand individual oral sharing. It also providesthe chance to combine critical thinking with practical experience as students make anactive contribution to their community in service learning projects.
Instructional Activities
A. In-Class Listening & Speaking Practice
A passage adopted from Voice of America (VOA) website, films or TV programs is used for listening and speaking practice during each meeting. After the listening practice, the students are guided to orally paraphrasing the talk or discuss several comprehension questions whenever necessary. Their performances will be counted into their weekly grade. The students should follow the procedures of this instructional activity:
1) To listen carefully/take notes (without reading the transcript) while the talk is played at a normal speed.
2) To discuss the main idea of the talk in pairs, groups, or whole class.
3) To listen and fill/type in the blanks while the talk is played 3 times at a slower speed.
4) To exchange handouts, check the answers (while playing the talk once again), and grade each other's work. (This step will be skipped, if we do this on a networked computer lab.)
5) To clarify the unknown.
6) To read out loudly (in whole class, groups, or individuals) by following the audio talk several times.
7) To orally paraphrase/summarize the talk or discuss comprehension questions.
B. Individual Talk show
The teacher will prepare topics and forms of the show, presentation, recitation , debate and restatement included via PPT ,IE book etc. According to the show, teachers will find out the oral or listening problems which will be solved in the next part of the class. The show should be prepared before classes.
Learning Outcomes
l Further imitate the conversational styles, forms and sounds of English.
l Further make/respond to requests and follow/give directions.
l Further initiate and sustain a general conversation in most social situations in a range
of circumstances
l Further speak about general differences between the cultures
l Further understand news stories and conversations about current, past and future
events.
l Further comprehend lectures on a range of academic and technical subjects.
l Participate in hands-on experiential active learning in listening/speaking situations
outside the classroom.
l Engage in responsible and challenging actions for the common good.
Grades:
At the end of the semester, students will receive a grade of A, B, C, D or N. The
grade will depend on work in class, homework, oral presentation, journal writing, quizzes and attendance. In order to exit the course, students must achieve a final class grade of C or above and have satisfactory listening/speaking test scores.
The grades will be given according to :
l End-of-the-term oral presentation
l Individual evaluation by the instructor of each in-class student presentation.
l End-of-the-term evaluation of students' ability to speak intelligently and intelligibly with
others(recorded conversation).
l Periodic submission to the instructor of student evaluations having to do with the
dynamics of the group (individual participation, conversational and group management
skills).
l Regular communication resulting from interaction between students/supervisors/clients
in each community service project.
